Push for Falconio review amid DNA doubt

LAWYERS will push to reopen the case of the outback killer Bradley John Murdoch after British police suspended their use of a controversial forensic DNA test that was used to help convict him of murdering the backpacker Peter Falconio.

After heavy criticism of the technique by a judge, British police also announced at the weekend a review of scores of cases where the low copy number DNA test was used to help obtain convictions. The test - which allows the use of particles a millionth the size of a grain of salt - was used during Murdoch's Supreme Court trial to link him to hand ties used to restrain Falconio's girlfriend, Joanne Lees, and to particles found on the steering wheel and gearstick of their van.

Jonathan Whitaker, an expert from England's Forensic Science Centre, which is at the centre of the test controversy, told the trial, in Darwin in 2005, that DNA found on the hand ties was 100 million times more likely to have come from Murdoch than anyone else.

Continued outside-the-box thinking will push the city forward, leading to continued growth.

What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: Iowa will attract newcomers only if it is perceived as a vibrant place to live. It should be recognized as much for its good education, financial opportunities, and emerging cultural diversity as for its extraordinary agricultural history.

My mentor: My late sister, Sue, who taught me to live life to the fullest and not take myself too seriously, and all the wonderful elderly people whom it has been my honor to serve.

My leadership philosophy: Make it my No. 1 priority to develop relationships based on mutual respect, and conduct myself with the utmost honesty.

If I could do something else, I would: Learn how to renovate older homes and fix them up for selling while maintaining their character.

Suspect in Marine's death seen near bus in Louisiana

Those remains have been sent to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for a formal identification.

Lauterbach disappeared sometime after Dec. 14, not long after she met with military prosecutors to talk about her April allegation that Laurean raped her. Naval investigators said Saturday the rape case was progressing and Laurean was under a protective order to stay away from Lauterbach.

In Louisiana, Whitehorn said he didn't know whether it was another passenger on the bus who had spotted Laurean and notified police. Shreveport is roughly 950 miles southwest of Jacksonville, and is about two dozen miles from the Texas border.

Earlier today, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Laurean was seen by a member of the general public, describing it only as a "transit" sighting.

Potential To Restore Range Of Motion, Accelerate Healing Using Freeze ...

Donated, freeze-dried tendon grafts loaded with gene therapy may soon offer effective repair of injured tendons, a goal that has eluded surgeons to date. According to study data published in the journal Molecular Therapy, a new graft technique may provide the first effective framework around which flexor tendon tissue can reorganize as it heals. Such tissue-engineering approaches could significantly improve repair of anterior cruciate ligaments and rotator cuffs as well, researchers said. The study was in a mouse model designed to resemble hard-to-repair flexor tendons in human hands, and the results should provide an impetus for future clinical trials.

Tendons are elastic cords that anchor muscle to bone and enable flexing muscle to move limbs. Related injuries represent nearly half of 33 million U.S.

U.S. marine-mammal experts fear for Arctic

Global temperatures have not risen other than trivially for the last six years. How is that anything but stable? Sure, it has not (yet) cooled to the average between 1960-1990, but that doesn't mean it's still warming. Posted 24/12/07 at 4:15 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
