Babette Martino: Recent Paintings
Paintings of local urban towns open the first exhibit of 2008 at the Gallery, The work of renowned painter Babette Martino features works of oil on panel. Martino is known for her quiet, muted approach to vacant townscapes and their environs, captured by a palette limited to 12 colors, including white. If people are represented in her work, it is usually a lone figure dwarfed by surrounding architecture. The vistas of local Pennsylvania towns and boroughs - including Conshohocken, Norristown and Manayunk - feature row homes, businesses and the urban infrastructure of streets, bridges and highways, and capture an environment of loneliness and solitude imbued by a study of light. .
Troubling Meaty 'Estrogen'
Women take note. Researchers find that a chemical that forms in overcooked meat, especially charred portions, is a potent mimic of estrogen, the primary female sex hormone. That's anything but appetizing, since studies have linked a higher lifetime cumulative exposure to estrogen in women with an elevated risk of breast cancer. .
Explosions In The Sky: "It’s shocking that we have any fans at all"
I've loved working with him on these last two albums, ‘cause we really don't know what we're doing in the studio at all. We're very ignorant of recording techniques, and what this or that microphone does. We can give him descriptions like, ‘we need this part to sound more sunshine-y', and he can take that and know what we're trying to say. We've learned to communicate so well, and if he doesn't quite get it we can sit around and talk ‘til he does. “We ended up finishing the ten days [in the studio] but weren't happy with the mix, so we spent three more days in Dallas finishing up. It was great having that much time – it allowed John to bring out certain sounds of the studio which I think were beneficial to the record. I'm glad we had the time. We're very particular about how we sound – we wanted a live, raw sound, and the studio was geared for that.
David Cameron: The NHS at 60
60 years ago, in 1948, one of the great British institutions came into being. The National Health Service - like the BBC or Parliament itself - fulfils a practical function: but it also binds the nation together. The 5 July 1948 - the day the NHS began - must have been an enormously exciting time for anyone working in medicine. People like Andrew Lansley's father, who was working in the pathology lab at Highland Hospital in North London. And people here in Trafford - the place where Nye Bevan symbolically inaugurated the NHS that day - by receiving the keys of the hospital on behalf of the state - know it more than anyone.I'd like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to a celebration this summer, for anyone who was working in the health service in 1948.
Slow realty market goes high-tech
He shot video, edited it on his computer (complete with soundtrack) and uploaded it to YouTube. And that round-the-clock radio campaign? You can hear it if you stop your car near the place and tune to 1670 AM as the "Talking House" sign in the yard suggests, a feat made possible by a small transmitter placed in the house. Not everything agents are trying is new - Talking House, produced by an Illinois firm, has been around for years - but there's a clear path toward higher-tech. One in five agents and brokers say they have a blog, and one out of four use social-networking sites, according to a real estate advertising survey released this month by Florida-based Classified Intelligence and Realty Times. Last year, neither strategy even registered on the survey, Classified Intelligence said.
Her attacker behind bars, fear no longer rules
She bought a gun and kept it in bed with her as she tried to sleep. She traded a comfortable home for an apartment complex with plenty of lights outside and people inside. Still, a year would pass before she felt secure enough that memories of her encounter with the man now believed to be a brazen serial predator in several states no longer would taint every choice she made. Only after learning that Joshua Michael Ridings, the man linked by DNA to her attack and the vicious abduction and assault on an 11-year-old West Virginia girl, had been identified and jailed could the woman who helped to bring about his arrest finally relax. "[I was] the most friendly, outgoing person you'd ever meet. I'm not so friendly anymore," said the 32-year-old woman, who lives with her 2-year-old child in Leitchfield, Ky.
